Occupational Safety and Environmental Compliance

OSEC is responsible for the development and implementation of Countywide employee safety programs and for ensuring environmental compliance of internal County operational activities. OSEC works with 7 full-time Environmental Health and Safety Professionals (Health and Hospital System Kevin Do and Michelle Del Rosario; Parks and Recreation Vikram Manke; Facilities and Fleet Dave Jones; Roads and Airports Chris Ellsbury and Arlene Pugh; and Consumer and Environmental Protection Ray Maiden, and more than 80 part-time Safety Coordinators, who devote their time and effort to managing departmental safety programs. Together, they support 46 County departments and 8 agencies with over 22,000 employees. Among the services being offered by OSEC are:

  • Occupational safety and environmental compliance support;
  • Facility inspection and auditing; environmental permitting assistance;
  • Establishment of Countywide occupational safety and hazardous materials management program;
  • Field investigations of accidents and hazardous materials incidents;
  • Safety and hazardous materials assessments of County facilities;
  • Annual newsletter; sponsor an annual safety seminar;
  • Training of Safety Coordinators;
  • Tending library;
  • Active member of Joint Union-Management Countywide Safety Committee

 

OSEC further tracks and interprets new federal, state and local legislation relating to environmental compliance and occupational safety, and modifies County policies and procedures as necessary.
